Implementation of the Alphanumeric CNPJ Requires Temporary Service Restrictions Between July 23 and 27

Measure precedes the new model’s entry into force and does not affect existing CNPJ registrations.

By Amanda Duarte

Legale Overseas, no. 989.

The Brazilian Federal Revenue Service (RFB) will implement the new alphanumeric National Registry of Legal Entities (CNPJ) model as of July 31, 2026, with the aim of expanding the capacity to generate new registration numbers in light of the anticipated exhaustion of combinations available under the current numeric-only format. The change will allow the use of both letters and numbers in the first 12 positions of the CNPJ, while maintaining the two check digits and the total length of 14 characters.

Existing CNPJ registrations will remain unchanged, and the new format will apply only to newly issued registrations. By preserving the 14-character structure, the measure seeks to minimize system-related impacts. Nevertheless, companies are advised to review whether their systems, databases, integrations, and validation processes are compatible with the new identification format and, if necessary, make the appropriate adjustments to ensure recognition of the updated standard.

As part of the final implementation phase, the Federal Revenue Service announced that the CNPJ database will operate under restricted conditions between July 23 and July 27. From 9:00 p.m. on July 23 until 7:00 a.m. on July 25, the system will be available only for consultation purposes, with no possibility of new registrations, amendments, or deregistrations. Beginning at 7:00 a.m. on July 25, the database will become fully unavailable, with full service restoration expected at 7:00 a.m. on July 27.

Vaz de Almeida Advogados is closely monitoring the implementation of the alphanumeric CNPJ system and its practical implications for corporate contracts, information systems, and companies’ registration procedures.
